Biblical Principles for Handling Depression and Despair

A Seminar For Sufferer and Comforter Alike

This is a Grace-centered, Christ-centered seminar for those who have suffered severe and long- term emotional pain and also for those whose pain is more seasonal.

Although the seminar is primarily directed towards the sufferer, the principles will also serve those who wish to understand, befriend, and comfort the sufferer.

The term ‘principles’ might be a little misleading. It is not suggested that, if we master a set of principles, healing is ensured. Instead, healing depends upon God and our relationship to Him. How then do ‘principles’ apply to a personal relationship?

Applying principles might not change the fact of God’s love in any way but will affect the way we experience that love, our sense of intimacy with God, and the hope and confidence we have in God.

Our thoughts, beliefs, and self-concepts are critical to a meaningful relationship with God. Our beliefs play midwife to our feelings. If we believe that the roof is caving in upon us, we will have a certain emotional reaction. Similarly, the way we believe about God and His salvation will impact our entire emotional outlook.

This seminar seeks to examine the relationship between belief and feeling. It seeks to address significant misconceptions we have about ourselves and our relationship with God.

The Role of Diagnosis and Analysis

It is difficult to determine how past influences have contributed to our present problems. Besides, such a diagnosis usually is of little help to the sufferer. For instance, knowing how we contracted cancer might not afford the slightest relief.

Nevertheless, self-knowledge does provide a meaningful tool. It helps us to avoid problems and to chart a life that brings peace. Just look at the Proverbs! This seminar will attempt to elucidate how self-knowledge results from being properly connected to God in faith.

Personal Bio

Since his early years, Daniel struggled with depression. Not finding God through his Jewish roots, he embarked upon a spiritual journey through diverse psychotherapies, alternative lifestyles, and various religions.

The peace he sought proved elusive until coming to a saving faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in 1976.  Even after that, peace and intimacy with the Lord came only gradually as he learned to walk the ‘walk of faith’.

Daniel and his wife Anita presently reside in Brooklyn, NY and are members of Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
